Damascus: Three Syrian Internal Security Forces staff were killed and several others were injured on Thursday during an operation to target an alleged Islamic State (IS) cell in the southern province of Daraa.
The clash occurred in Al-Sanamayn, when security agents were attempting to apprehend a wanted person. Authorities said an IS-linked armed group opened fire on a security patrol, forcing security forces to surround the area and undertake a raid.
While following the group's members, security forces enforced a temporary curfew in town. Authorities later stated that multiple people had been apprehended, and that the operation had disrupted IS cells.
IS lost territorial control of Syria in 2019, but it continues to operate through sleeper cells, carrying out assaults against security personnel.
