Netanyahu Proposes Citizenship Law Over Criticism of Israeli Soldiers

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to introduce legislation allowing citizenship to be revoked from people who "defame" Israeli soldiers, amid controversy over the documentary NAZA.
Directed by Israeli journalists Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, the film alleges that civilian casualties were routinely considered in Israeli military targeting decisions in Gaza. Netanyahu and the military reject the allegations.
The documentary, which recently won a major prize at the Venice Film Festival, has sparked strong reactions in Israel. The military is examining possible legal action against those involved.
Netanyahu also proposed increasing statutory damages for defamation involving soldiers by 20 times. He cited the film, comments by former general Yair Golan and a leaked video involving the abuse of a Gaza detainee.
Any new citizenship law could face legal challenges in Israel's courts.
