Uganda Opposition Leader’s Wife Warns of State Crackdown

Kampala: Winnie Byanyima, wife of detained Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, on Saturday accused the government of deploying the full force of the state against those challenging longtime President Yoweri Museveni.
Besigye, 70, is arrested on rebellion charges arising from an alleged conspiracy against Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who has held power since 1986. Byanyima begged authorities to release him on bail, claiming he requires medical attention after collapsing and being sent to intensive care.
Byanyima cited opposition politician Bobi Wine, who unsuccessfully ran for president earlier this year and is currently in exile, to argue that opposing Museveni would result in significant state pressure.
Following Museveni's disputed election victory, international observers voiced alarm about Uganda's human rights record. The government has also drawn criticism for its crackdown on opposition figures, attorneys, and independent media.
