Washington: The United States criticised China's ‘dangerous and aggressive’ behaviour during a recent naval clash with the Philippines, in which a Filipino sailor was injured.

The confrontation occurred near the controversial Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea, where Chinese and Philippine warships have frequently clashed. The Philippines said that navy troops were hurt during the incident, and Manila accused Chinese forces of risky movements and aggressive behaviour.

The United States reaffirmed its support for the Philippines while criticising China's conduct in the disputed waters. Washington has repeatedly warned that its mutual defence treaty with Manila may cover armed strikes on Philippine forces, vessels, and aircraft in the South China Sea.

The new incident adds to rising tensions between the two countries, which have seen repeated clashes over contested marine territories.
