Xi Jinping Heads to US for Summit Talks with Donald Trump
Chinese President Xi Jinping left Beijing on Wednesday for a three-day state visit to the United States, where he is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump for summit talks.
Xi is travelling with his wife, Peng Liyuan, along with senior officials including Cai Qi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Trump is expected to greet Xi at Joint Base Andrews when he arrives in the Washington area, followed by a formal welcome ceremony at the White House on Thursday and a state dinner.
The visit marks Xi’s first US state visit since 2015. The two leaders are expected to discuss major issues in US-China relations, including trade, artificial intelligence, rare earth minerals and Taiwan. Iran and broader strategic relations are also expected to feature in the talks.
The visit follows Trump’s trip to China in May, when the two leaders discussed trade, investment and wider bilateral relations. China has described the reciprocal visits within six months as having “historic significance.”
