Vermont: Vermont has officially become the first state in the United States to ban the widely used herbicide Paraquat due to its scientific links to Parkinson’s disease.

Governor Phil Scott signed the landmark bipartisan legislation, which is scheduled to take effect on November 1. To prevent severe economic shocks to local agriculture, the law implements a strategic phase-out period to give farmers time to transition. Paraquat is already banned in more than 70 countries, including China, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and the entire European Union, because of its extreme toxicity.

While the federal Environmental Protection Agency still permits the chemical's use across the rest of the nation, Vermont lawmakers acted independently to safeguard public health. Health advocates have hailed the decision as a monumental victory for the safety of agricultural workers and rural residents.
