Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, a former undocumented migrant from El Salvador, as the new bishop of West Virginia.
The 56-year-old, currently serving as an auxiliary bishop in Washington, was named to lead the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, marking a significant milestone in his journey from migrant to senior church leader.
Menjivar-Ayala migrated to the United States in 1990 after fleeing conflict in his home country and has since become known for his advocacy for immigrant communities.
The appointment comes amid heightened tensions between the Vatican and US President Donald Trump, particularly over immigration policies and broader geopolitical issues.
Observers say the move reflects the Pope’s continued emphasis on inclusion and support for migrants, while also highlighting the growing diversity within the leadership of the Catholic Church in the United States.
