Azerbaijan Says Iranian Drone Hit Airport Near Border

Nakhchivan : Azerbaijan said a drone launched from Iran struck an airport in its territory, marking the first reported Iranian strike in the Caucasus since the start of the conflict involving the United States and Israel against Tehran.

According to Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry, the drone hit the terminal building of an airport in Nakhchivan, an Azerbaijani exclave bordering Iran. The strike damaged part of the airport complex and injured two civilians.

Authorities also reported that a second drone crashed near a school in a nearby village. Officials in Baku said the country reserves the right to take retaliatory measures.

Azerbaijan has largely maintained a neutral stance in the Middle East conflict but has strengthened military and political ties with Israel and the administration of Donald Trump in the United States in recent years.

Analysts say the incident is notable because Azerbaijan hosts no U.S. military bases, raising questions about whether Iran is expanding its strikes beyond locations directly linked to American forces.

Relations between Baku and Tehran have been complex. Azerbaijan’s growing cooperation with Israel has caused friction with Iran, although the two neighbours have generally maintained pragmatic ties. Iran is also home to a large ethnic Azeri population living mainly in provinces near the Azerbaijani border.
