Jennifer Love Hewitt says she’s experienced a “loss of innocence” since her breakout role in I Know What You Did Last Summer back in the mid-90s.

Now 46, the actress is returning to her iconic role as Julie James in a new installment of the horror franchise, and she admits the project has stirred deep emotions and reflections on her younger self.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hewitt was asked if she still feels connected to the 18-year-old version of herself.

“Yeah, I do. Very much so,” she said. “I’ve definitely had a loss of innocence and trauma in my life. Some of my friends don’t [feel this way], but I still feel uniquely connected to my youth and who I was then. I carry her with me, and that’s an important thing to do as you get older.”

She added, “When you lose that, you lose something very drastic. So I still feel very connected to that part of my life, for sure.”

Revisiting the character of Julie has also heightened her sense of fear, Hewitt revealed.

“I’ve become a tad bit more paranoid,” she confessed. “Even back during the first film, I was already terrified of horror movies. And I was very aware of the fact that we were filming in a real fishing village in Southport, North Carolina.”

Hewitt stars in the upcoming film alongside Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, and Jonah Hauer-King.
