Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Men’s Footballer of the Year, capping another influential season for the Portugal international.

The midfielder has delivered a standout campaign, scoring eight goals and providing 20 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. His creativity and leadership have been central to Manchester United’s improved form under interim manager Michael Carrick, with Fernandes often driving the team in key moments.

Despite United’s season ending without silverware for a second consecutive year, the club are on course to finish third in the Premier League, securing Champions League qualification for next season. Fernandes’ impact has been widely credited as a major factor in that resurgence.

The 31-year-old, who joined United from Sporting in January 2020 for £67.7 million, reached 300 appearances for the club earlier this season. His latest recognition makes him the first Manchester United player to win the FWA men’s award since Wayne Rooney in 2010.

Fernandes’ future at Old Trafford had appeared uncertain last year, with reports suggesting United would not block a move if he chose to accept a lucrative offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. However, he opted to remain in Manchester, turning down interest from other European clubs as well. His current contract runs until 2027, with an option for a further year.

It is now widely expected that United will move to secure his long-term future, despite ongoing efforts by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to reduce wage expenditure.
