Nod for proposal to help destitute women

The Financial and Economic Affairs Committee have approved a proposal by a group of legislators seeking a new monthly allowance of BD200 for divorced, widowed and single Bahraini women above 40 years old and with no stable source of income.

MPs Isa Al Kooheji, Abdulrahman Buali, Mohammed Al Ammadi, Mohammed Al Jowder and Adel Al Assoomy had presented the proposal to the committee in May.

They said the proposal sought to “allow the State to activate its leading role to take care of citizens who have no sources of income or a supporter, and to achieve the constitutional principle of protecting such categories of citizens from poverty.”

The committee studied the proposal for six months before the approval and will submit it in front of the members of the council for voting.

The committee explained that opinions were sought from several related authorities before taking a decision.

The committee’s judgment came despite the rejection of the Social Development (currently Labour and Social Development) Ministry and the reservation of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), which said that “women in this category were already there in the State’s social insurance scheme and were receiving monthly allowances according to their status.”

The ministry also mentioned that the women were receiving BD170 on a monthly basis.

Sharing a similar view, the SCW informed the committee that “the targeted category of Bahraini women receive a set of services and assistance such as social aid, financial support, discounted electricity and water bills and housing allowances.”
