The Bahrain Parliament yesterday urged the Health Ministry to swiftly implement solutions to tackle the persistent issue of medical errors in government healthcare facilities. This call to action was prompted by the review of a parliamentary committee’s report on the state of medical services in these centres.

Formed last October following a request tabled by several, the committee, chaired by MP Mahdi Al Shuwaikh with MP Abdullah Al Rumaihi as the vice chairman, presented its findings during the session.

They expressed appreciation for the cooperation received from various entities, including the Supreme Health Council, in addressing these concerns. MP Jameel Mulla Hassan emphasised the importance of not staying silent on medical errors, especially as complaints have risen significantly.

Additionally, MP Mohsen Al Asboul advocated for creating more job opportunities in the medical sector to address unemployment among skilled professionals. MP Abdulnabi Salman, the First Deputy Speaker, stressed the necessity of a comprehensive review of the healthcare sector beyond just addressing medical errors.

Issues

The committee’s report, comprising six chapters, highlights issues such as medication shortages, long patient waiting times, and the need for updated protocols. One notable finding is a competency deficit, particularly in the Emergency Department at Salmaniya Medical Complex, impacting specialised care delivery.

To remedy these issues, the committee recommends expediting recruitment processes, establishing transparent criteria for hiring and promotion, and creating specialised units for patient care, such as a dedicated department for female diabetes patients. They also propose the development of an integrated information system to enhance coordination and supply chain management across healthcare facilities.
