Drug smuggler loses plea

TDT | Manama

The First Supreme Criminal Court of Appeal has confirmed a 5-year imprisonment sentence awarded to a drug smuggler. The suspect, an Asian national, was caught while attempting to smuggle drugs into Kingdom by hiding int a mobile phone box.

The man stood trial in August last year on the charges of smuggling hashish and narcotics with the intent of selling it, in addition to drugs abuse. He was arrested at Bahrain International Airport.

As per officers’ testimonies, they found a mobile phone (iPhone) box from the man stuffed with a substance smelling like hashish. Court statements say, two pieces of hashish and narcotic pills were found hidden inside the box.

The suspect, however, told Public Prosecution officials that the drugs were for personal use and not for selling. Investigators, however, found that the substance was packed in a method preparing it to be sold.

Laboratory tests of the man’s urine and blood also proved that the man had abused drugs. He appealed not guilty, but the court rejected his pleas.
