School Mini Olympics action begins today
Manama : Action in the fifth School Mini Olympics, being organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, begins today.
The Bahrain Volleyball Association’s gym, located at Isa Sports City in Riffa, will host a one-day volleyball competition from 9 am onwards. Teams were divided into four groups of four teams, with each group winners and runners-up reaching the quarter-finals knock-out stage.
Elsewhere, the Bahrain Sports Federation for People with Disabilities will host the gymnastics event, which will also run for one day. Action commences at 11am with the 7-9 years girls and boys contests. 10-12 boys and girls is the other age category event, to be followed by the prize-distribution ceremony at 1.15pm.
The single-day cycling championship is also set for today from 8 am onwards near the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir. It will see two races for boys (7km) and girls (5km). The second race commences at 9.30am, featuring a more challenging boys (10km) and girls (7km) races.
The winner of each race will take 12 points, runner-up 10 points, third-placer will get 8, 6 points for fourth-placed riders, 5 points for the sixth, 3 points for the seventh position while eighth placers will receive 2 points.
The fifth edition of the Mini Olympics got underway to a colourful opening ceremony on Thursday by Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King for charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and BOC president, at Isa Sports City
hall.
Hamza Al Chuban, a member of Muharraq Club football team, was the Mini Olympics torchbearer before he delivered it to Shaikh Nasser to declare the Mini Olympics open.
Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, BOC board member and Women’s Sports Committee chairwoman, said she was pleased with the overall progress made by the Bahrain Olympic Committee in bringing the School Mini Olympics over the past years.
She noted that the Mini Olympics is one of the committee’s elite programmes that helps in the development of school sports and beefs up sports clubs and national teams with promising talents in different sports.
On his part, Parliament Council member Ebrahim Al Hammadi said the event is a crucial national project that aims to discover young sports athletes and prepare them to become the future heroes for Bahrain.
As for Omar Al Malki, BOC board member described the Mini Olympics as a pioneering step that evolves every year to become a major national sporting event that brings up talented students in a number of sports.
