Bahrain to compete at Baku Games

Manama : Bahrain will send an official delegation to the Fourth edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.

They will compete in three sports – athletics, shooting and wrestling at the games, which will take place between May 12 and 22, with 4,000 athletes from 57 countries expected to take part.

Supreme Council for Youth and Sports deputy general secretary and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) general secretary Abdulrahman Askar said the Bahrain participation at this event is a great opportunity for the nation to compete with the region’s best athletes and achieve progress in their respective sports.

“Our participation at Baku comes as per approval from the Bahrain Olympic Committee board and in line with its 2017 calendar international competition programme, and the Solidarity Games is an important stop in pursuit to win as many medals as possible,” said Askar.

Sports at the games include gymnastics, athletics, basketball, football, boxing, swimming, handball, judo, karate, ping-pong, volleyball, wrestling, wushu, badminton, and taekwondo.

Turkey is one of the 57 countries that will participate and one of the strongest candidates to become the host county for the next
games.

The games kicked off in 2005 in Saudi Arabia and aim to emphasize Islamic unity and solidarity through sports. The fourth edition of the games will be launched with the motto ‘Journey from the Caspian’.
