Public urged to be wary of Diwali fireworks

ManamaDiwali, the Indian festival of lights, calls for loads of lights, crackers and sweets while it also brings in unwanted accidents and health hazards. With barely hours left for the festival, the authorities have cautioned the public, especially children, while bursting crackers.

Speaking to DT News, the General Director of Civil Defence, Brigadier Abdul Abdul Aziz Dashed Al Aamer said, “We strongly do not recommend crackers and neither encourage children to use them unsafely. As Civil Defence, the prime focus is the safety of public, and we urge the parents to take extra care while celebrating.” He also urged the residents to reach 999 in case of any emergency.

As a part of an investigation, DT News shopped some crackers that are plainly available at the shops inside Bab Al Bahrain.

The shopkeepers are least bothered about the unsafe practices and showed a run-a-risk attitude when asked about the legitimacy of the products. The authorities at Bahrain’s border are on high alert over the growing number of firecrackers being smuggled into the country. Though the product is banned, it continues to be popular among children who traditionally use them after breaking their fast during Ramadan.

Researches have backed up that sudden exposures to loud noise can lead to a temporary or permanent deafness.

In certain cases, they can also lead to heart ailments. Bronchitis is another acute infection, caused due to exposure to smoke.

Face and hands are most vulnerable to burns, the intensity of which depends on the crackers.

Dr. Shamnad, Medical Director, Shifa Al Jazeera Medical Centre, warned of health issues during the festival season.

“Those who are suffering from diabetes need to be more watchful during Diwali. People tend to consume more sweets and put on extra pounds during the festival season. I recommend low-calorie sweets as a perfect alternative to heavy ghee sweets. It is not possible to purely avoid sweets, so what I recommend is to take them in a minimal quantity. Also strictly avoid sugar, and use honey and jaggery instead,” the doctor advised.
