Charity football tournament held
Manama : A charity football tournament took place yesterday featuring more than 200 youngsters playing in Under-10 and Under-14 competitions at the Bahrain Rugby Football Club in Saar featuring two age categories and raising more than BD1,200.
The aim of the event was to raise money to help last year’s earthquake relief in Nepal and the rebuilding of schools, supply of materials and books for schools as well as a new supply of teachers.
Aside from Nepal the event also focused on Cambodia with the aim of helping the setting up of new schools and the supply of educational books.
Behind this initiative is 13-year old Grade 9 Dutch student at St Christopher’s School in Isa Town Roma Vrijhof and her friends.
“I have really worked hard on this initiative with my friends and support from my dad Paul and mum Sylvia and want to try and help the less fortunate in our society of nations.”
Roma added, “I have been supported all the way by my parents, friends at school and many volunteers to make this a success and to do better than last year and I’m also thankful to the companies who have joined in and sponsored the initiative.”
The Under-14 matches category was won by Arsenal, followed by Rugby Club, Al Fursan, Globetrotters, Vamos Bahrain, Aramco and Tekkers. which featured seven sides in two groups, with Arsenal winning 2-0 in the final and Al Fursan 2-1 winners over Globetrotters.
In the Under-10 competition featuring five teams playing in a round-robin mini league, Tekkers Blue were first, with Arsenal Red runners-up with Tekkers Black, Al Hekma and Arsenal Yellow third to fifth respectively.
Aside from the football, money was raised through the sale of T-shirt sales, a prize raffle and baked cookies and biscuits with all proceeds going to Nepal and Cambodia charities.
