Diabetes cases rise in Bahrain

Manama : Ministry of Health (MoH)'s Undersecretary Dr. Ayesha Mubarak Bu Enq said the rate of diabetes incidence in above twenty adult population has reached about 14.3% and may reach more than 20% if we add the number of vulnerable population.
Statistics indicated that the annual rate of incidence of type I diabetes in children has increased in Bahrain as in the rest of the world countries over the last ten years from 8 to 23 individual patients per 100,000 population, according to a recent survey of non-contagious diseases in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

This came during an awareness event organized by Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC)'s Nursing Department at the entrance of Outpatient Clinics marking the World Health Day themed "Beat diabetes", attended by the Ministry of Health (MoH)'s Undersecretary Dr. Ayesha Mubarak Bu Enq and senior ministry officials and staff. 

The event which was supported by LH-BH included a health exhibition, medical checkups including glucose levels measurement, distribution of booklets, posters, information about diabetes.

Dr. Bu Enq praised the cultural awareness role undertaken by SMC healthcare workers in boosting community awareness about the diseases and its complications. She said the ministry continues to pay much attention to prevent the disease onset and reduce its complications and to enhance the health condition of patients and quality of medical treatment provided to patients from all specialized departments, including internal medicine, endocrinology, ophthalmology, kidney and neurology departments.
