Bahrain court jails man for assaulting neighbour

Manama: A man accused of causing permanent disability to his neighbour during a physical attack has been jailed for two years. The latter reportedly fell into a coma following the assault, but recovered his consciousness in a Thailand hospital.

According to court files, the victim fell down from the stairs. Meanwhile, during interrogations the accused stated that he had acted in self-defence when his neighbour accosted him.

“My wife told me that he (the victim) had shouted at her and hurled insults at her. A few days later, I received a phone call from him and he was shouting without any reason. I requested him to hang up the phone and come to me to settle the issue,” the alleged assailant told prosecutors.

“When he came to meet me, he was very aggressive. So I wanted to protect myself. I pushed him and he fell down from the stairs,” he added.

However, the victim told prosecutors that his neighbour was a nuisance for him. So he went and knocked his door. “When he opened the door he immediately attacked me. I woke up in Thailand and they told me that I was in a coma,” he explained.

The defendant, according to a medical report, suffered a permanent 45 per cent hearing loss in his right ear.
