Youth Gain Insight into Parliament and Legislative Work

Young participants at Youth City 2030 were introduced to Bahrain’s parliamentary system and the legislative and oversight roles of the Shura Council and Council of Representatives during interactive awareness sessions held to mark International Youth Day.

The sessions formed part of programmes aimed at strengthening parliamentary culture among young people, increasing their understanding of legislative work and encouraging active participation in public affairs.

The General Secretariat of the Shura Council organised an interactive session for participants in the first edition of the “Junior Parliamentarian” programme, held in strategic partnership with the Youth Leadership Association and in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth Affairs.

Legal researchers Hawra Ali and Muneera Al Abbasi delivered a presentation covering the powers and responsibilities of the Shura Council, as well as cooperation between the Shura Council and Council of Representatives and coordination between the legislative and executive authorities.

The session also highlighted the complementary roles of the two chambers and their contribution to Bahrain’s development.

Separately, the Secretariat General of the Council of Representatives held an awareness lecture on parliamentary culture as part of Youth City 2030 activities.

Dr Shaikha Al Alaiwi, Executive Legal Researcher at the Secretariat General, introduced participants to the Council of Representatives, its legislative and oversight powers, parliamentary procedures and the role of parliamentary committees.

The lecture also explained the stages involved in discussing bills and proposals and emphasised the importance of national participation and fostering active citizenship among young people.

The two initiatives reflect the efforts of Bahrain’s parliamentary institutions to promote parliamentary awareness among younger generations and provide them with a better understanding of the country’s legislative process.
