DANAT, MIT File Joint AI Patent to Transform Pearl Identification

 

New technology aims to enhance accuracy of gem testing through artificial intelligence and machine learning

The Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have filed a joint patent application for an innovative pearl identification method that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to advance gemological testing.

The patent filing marks a significant step forward in the research partnership launched between DANAT and MIT in 2022. The collaboration, which began as a scientific effort to study pearls at the nanoscale level, has evolved into a practical innovation aimed at developing more advanced, data-driven approaches for pearl analysis.

The research examines the microscopic structural, optical, morphological and chemical characteristics that define a pearl’s identity. These features could help specialists determine a pearl’s formation process, possible origin, and unique characteristics with greater precision.

The project also explores the use of machine learning technologies to classify pearls and identify individual markers that can distinguish one pearl from another.

The development comes amid growing challenges in the global pearl industry, where advances in cultivation techniques and production methods have made identification increasingly complex. Differentiating between natural pearls, cultured pearls, and other categories requires increasingly sophisticated analytical methods.

DANAT said the new AI-driven approach could support more accurate laboratory assessments, strengthen confidence in pearl certification, and contribute to the future of scientific testing within the global pearl trade.

The initiative further highlights Bahrain’s role in advancing pearl research and innovation through international scientific partnerships.
