Bahrain’s Crochet Queens join to break gunness world record
Expats from Bahrain also will join Mother India’s Crochet Queens when they reveal the largest crochet blanket in the world at MNM Jain Engineering College, Chennai tomorrow, January 31 .
Nine expat ladies and four kids have left for Chennai from Bahrain to attend the event which will set the Guinness World Record, informed Bahrain coordinator Anu Venugopal.
Expat ladies in Bahrain who joined the silent movement have contributed 130 blankets from Bahrain. Since August 2015, the group Mother India’s Crochet Queens, spearheaded by Subashri Natarajan in Chennai, comprising nearly 1,000 Indian women from India and other countries, including the USA, the Gulf, Europe, and Australia, have been busy with their hooks and yarn to beat the current record of the biggest crochet blanket in the world, that stands at 3,377 square meters set by South Africa in April 2015.
But the intention is not just to create a world record, but to donate the blankets to the needy. In last December Bahrain wing of Mother India’s Crochet Queens, a social media-based group of crochet enthusiasts, who aims to be part of the Guinness World Record of knitting the largest crochet blanket in the world, had displayed all the finished blankets at the Ramli Mall.
Bahrain wing of Crochet Queens includes around 50 Indian ladies from the Kingdom who were patiently knitting crochets in their apartments in Bahrain out of their interest in the mission of being part of an attempt to create a new Guinness record.
The initial target was to join 5,000 blankets together, but Subashri says they have even exceeded that. Guinness officials will fly down from London to measure the blanket and officially bestow upon thethe group the title of the World’s Largest Crochet Blanket by a Participating Group.
