Al Wefaq General Secretary on trial for ‘hate tweets’

The General Secretary of Al Wefaq Islamic Society is facing another trial on account of anti-government tweets made on his Twitter account.

Ali Salman, who is already serving a four-year sentence, was questioned yesterday before the Public Prosecution.

He later sent to jail, after he was charged with publicly inciting against the constitutional order in the country and failing to abide the laws.

The Public Prosecution announced in a statement that the suspect’s Twitter account is still broadcasting tweets inciting against abiding the rules and participate in illegal demonstrations.

Mohammed Al Maliki, the acting chief prosecutor of the Capital Governorate, said in the statement that Salman was interrogated after the Anti-corruption and Security and Electronic Security Directorate tipped the Public Prosecution about the violations made on his Twitter account.

“He pleaded not guilty, and was sent back to his cell. Further investigations will be made into the case ahead of referring the case to the specialised court,” he said.

Salman was earlier sentenced to four years behind bars for publicly inciting hatred among a segment of society, insulting the Ministry of Interior and inciting non-compliance with the law.
