Bahrain’s Parliament has approved an urgent proposal to establish a backup passenger sea link with Saudi Arabia, aimed at ensuring travel continuity during disruptions.
The plan calls for coordination with Saudi authorities to launch a regular ferry service that can serve as an alternative when the King Fahd Causeway or air routes are unavailable due to congestion, emergencies, or security concerns.
Speaker Ahmed Salman Al Musallam said the proposed route would provide a flexible and reliable transport option for citizens and residents, including access to regional airports such as King Fahd International Airport. MPs noted the service could also ease pressure on the causeway during peak periods and support marine transport, tourism, and investment opportunities.
