The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in Bahrain has launched a two-day regional workshop on the responsible governance of artificial intelligence (AI) in Arab countries.

Held on September 16–17, the workshop is organised in cooperation with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Arab Information and Communication Technologies Organisation (AICTO).

The event brings together representatives from governments, national human rights institutions, regional and international organisations, UN agencies, the private sector and civil society to discuss AI developments and their implications for human rights.

Addressing the opening session, First Advocate General Wael Rashid Buallay, Assistant Public Prosecutor, highlighted the potential of AI to support the development of the justice system and improve procedural efficiency while protecting rights and privacy.

He also outlined the Public Prosecution's efforts to establish responsible AI-use frameworks based on human oversight, transparency, accountability, equality and non-discrimination.
