Bahrain Joins Global Statement on Strait of Hormuz Tensions
The Kingdom of Bahrain has joined a joint international statement addressing escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, alongside countries including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Japan, Canada, South Korea, and several other nations.
The joint statement strongly condemned recent attacks attributed to Iran targeting unarmed commercial vessels in the Gulf, as well as strikes on civilian infrastructure, including oil and gas facilities. It also criticized what it described as the effective closure of the strategic waterway by Iranian forces.
Participating countries expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict and urged Iran to immediately halt threats, naval mining activities, and drone and missile attacks. They also called for an end to any actions disrupting commercial shipping through the strait, stressing the need to comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817.
The statement reaffirmed that freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law, including provisions outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It warned that continued disruptions could have far-reaching consequences for populations worldwide, particularly vulnerable communities.
Countries further emphasized that interference with global shipping lanes and energy supply chains poses a serious threat to international peace and security. They called for an immediate and comprehensive halt to attacks on civilian infrastructure, including oil and gas installations.
The statement also highlighted readiness among participating nations to support efforts ensuring safe passage through the strait. It welcomed coordinated actions such as the release of strategic oil reserves, endorsed by the International Energy Agency, and measures to stabilize global energy markets, including increasing production in cooperation with oil-producing countries.
Additionally, the countries pledged support for nations most affected by the crisis through international mechanisms, including the United Nations and global financial institutions. The statement concluded by underscoring that maritime security and freedom of navigation benefit all nations and called on the international community to uphold international law and principles essential for global stability and prosperity.
