A business owner will face trial on today accused of collecting more than BD240,000 in value added tax from customers and failing to pass it on to the National Bureau for Revenue.
The Head of the Tax Evasion Crimes Unit at the Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution said the unit received a report from the bureau after the man filed VAT returns but did not remit the sums due, in breach of the VAT law.
Prosecutors said investigators moved once the report came in, ordering access to the accused’s bank accounts and those of his establishment, which falls under the VAT regime. Statements were taken from specialists at the National Bureau for Revenue and the case papers were reviewed.
