A proposal calling for a youth centre to be built in Wadi Al Sail will be discussed in Parliament on Tuesday.
Submitted by MP Dr Ali Al Nuaimi, the request urges the Government to establish a centre serving residents of the area, offering youth programmes alongside sports and cultural activities.
The memo backing the proposal says the centre would help young people develop sporting and cultural talents, put their energy to better use, and bring them together through a wider range of programmes.
It argues there is no similar youth centre in Wadi Al Sail.
Approval
Parliament’s Services Committee has recommended approval, with all members present agreeing the case rests on public-interest grounds.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs told Parliament it places strong focus on youth empowerment centres and works to reach young people across different areas, with an emphasis on finding, developing and showcasing their talents.
It said this supports its work to enable youth to contribute to sustainable development.
The ministry said the Southern Governorate already has nine youth empowerment centres, as well as a specialist centre, offering activities across cultural, sporting, educational and professional fields.
Priority
It added it is prioritising support for existing centres to improve performance and make better use of available facilities, including wider use of technology and greater focus on job skills, alongside newer trends in sport and leisure.
The ministry also spoke of stronger links between centres through joint programmes and closer coordination, aimed at raising the standard of activities and attracting more young people, while giving them more chances to meet and share experience.
In its response, the ministry pointed to the Hamad Town Model Youth Centre, which it said is close to Wadi Al Sail.
Beneficiaries
The centre, it added, served more than 18,000 beneficiaries and ran more than 50 programmes and events during 2024, and young people from Wadi Al Sail can make full use of its services.
