Nashville: Christa Pike, a 50-year-old Tennessee death row woman, has regained consciousness and begun speaking after surviving a failed lethal injection execution on September 30, according to her lawyers. She is currently in the hospital receiving vital medical care, and her lawyers have warned that her prognosis is unpredictable and that she will have a long rehabilitation.

According to sources, Pike was given two doses of pentobarbital during the execution attempt. According to her legal team, complications fitting the intravenous lines caused the medicine to flow into her arms' tissues, leaving them extremely swollen, burnt, and blistered. She was initially unconscious and was put on a ventilator while physicians treated her.

The failed execution lasted around two and a half hours and included multiple efforts to establish IV access. Pike's attorneys are attempting to preserve records and other evidence from the procedure, claiming that the occurrence may have violated her constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishment. A court hearing on their request was set for Wednesday.

Pike was condemned to death for her role in the 1995 torture and murder of Colleen Slemmer, aged 19. She was supposed to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years. Following the disastrous attempt, Governor Bill Lee suspended all executions in the state for the rest of 2026 and ordered an independent review.
