Bahrain and Qatar Launch First International Passenger Sea Link in the GCC

Project Marks a New Era in Regional Connectivity and Cooperation

Bahrain and Qatar have officially launched the first-ever international passenger sea route within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The inaugural voyage departed from Sa’ada Port in Muharraq, Bahrain, bound for Al Ruwais Port in Qatar, marking a significant leap in strengthening Gulf maritime connectivity and cooperation.

His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, emphasized that the launch of the Bahrain-Qatar passenger ferry service reflects the wise leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. He noted that the initiative embodies Bahrain’s commitment to expanding transportation networks and fostering joint Gulf cooperation.

Upon arrival in Qatar, Dr. Shaikh Abdullah was warmly received by His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Thani, Qatar’s Minister of Transport, alongside senior officials, in a festive atmosphere celebrating the strong fraternal ties between the two nations.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shaikh Abdullah said the strategic project opens new horizons for passenger maritime transport between Bahrain and other GCC nations, facilitating the movement of citizens, residents, and visitors while supporting tourism, cultural exchange, and social connection. “This new sea route represents the first international passenger maritime link between two Gulf countries,” he added.

He explained that the Ministry is developing an integrated passenger transport network linking Bahrain to its regional neighbors under the highest standards of safety and sustainability — a step aligned with the principles of Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, founded on sustainability, competitiveness, and fairness.

He also praised the full support provided by His Excellency Lt. Gen. Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, in facilitating the project’s implementation in line with the highest safety and security standards. This collaboration, he said, exemplifies the spirit of government integration that defines Bahrain’s national development approach and strengthens its regional standing in the maritime transport sector.

Dr. Shaikh Abdullah expressed deep appreciation to H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Thani and all Qatari entities involved for their cooperation and dedication in realizing this joint project, underscoring that the new route strengthens the bonds of unity and integration between the two brotherly nations.

Hussain Mohammed Al Qassir, Chairman of the “Masar” Group, stated that the passenger sea route aligns with the vision of Mumtalakat, Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, in supporting national projects that enhance transportation and tourism infrastructure. He explained that Masar Group, a subsidiary of Mumtalakat, will operate the passenger service between Bahrain and Qatar as part of its commitment to bolstering the national economy and diversifying its foundations.

Engineer Yousif Khalifa Al Mannai, CEO of Masar Group, expressed pride in operating the new route, noting that the journey between Sa’ada Port in Muharraq and Al Ruwais Port in Qatar will take approximately 70 minutes. Bookings can be made via the dedicated MASAR mobile app, offering passengers flexibility and convenience. He affirmed the company’s commitment to delivering a safe, comfortable, and high-quality maritime travel experience.

The inauguration of this sea link marks a major milestone in GCC maritime connectivity and underscores Bahrain’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation, facilitating travel across Gulf states, and promoting maritime tourism as a key pillar of economic growth.
