Bahraini MP Mariam Al Dhaen has submitted a parliamentary proposal calling for all commercial vehicles and trucks in the Kingdom of Bahrain to be equipped with an intelligent digital tracking system designed to monitor and record road activity.
The proposed system would measure key driving metrics such as speed, distance travelled, driving and rest hours, and stoppage periods. It would continuously and accurately record this data, allowing regulatory authorities to analyze driver behavior and detect any violations related to speeding or prolonged driving that could lead to fatigue or accidents.
In her proposal, Al Dhaen recommended the installation of tachographs — advanced devices widely used in developed countries — as one of the key tools to enhance road safety and ensure proper monitoring of driver performance. She emphasized that the initiative aims to improve road safety standards, reduce fatigue- and speed-related accidents, promote a culture of responsible driving, and support authorities in developing data-driven transport policies that enhance road efficiency and safety.
Al Dhaen explained in her supporting memorandum that the proposal seeks to align Bahrain’s land transport practices with international best standards, similar to European countries that have mandated tachograph systems for passenger and freight transport vehicles under EU Regulation No. 165 of 2014. This regulation governs the recording of speed, time, and braking activity as essential components of occupational and traffic safety.
