Nepal Flood Catastrophe Tests PM Balendra Shah’s Young Government

Nepal's 36 years old Prime Minister Balendra Shah is facing the most difficult test of his young government after a fatal glacial collapse triggered catastrophic floods, killing over 1,000 people and leaving almost 4,500 missing.

Shah, a former Kathmandu mayor and rapper, took office six months ago on promises of political reform and a break with Nepal's established political elite. The magnitude of the disaster, however, has focused attention on his government's ability to manage rescue, relief, and reconstruction.

The disaster on August 26 caused a large surge of water and debris through areas of the Himalayan nation, devastating homes, highways, bridges, and hydropower equipment. Authorities have cautioned that reconstruction may cost billions of dollars, putting further strain on Nepal's already limited resources.

Shah has visited ravaged regions and called for national unity, but his government claims officials are working in extremely tough conditions. However, the prime minister has faced criticism for not formally addressing the nation during the crisis, raising concerns about his leadership and communication approach.

The calamity comes as Shah's popularity and reform goals are already being questioned. Analysts believe the floods will determine whether the goodwill that propelled him to office survives the country's first major catastrophe under his leadership.

The incident has also highlighted Nepal's increased vulnerability to climate-related disasters in the Himalayas, where rising temperatures increase the risk of glacial melt and flash floods.
