Argentina Moves to Block British-Israeli Falklands Oil Project

Buenos Aires: Argentine environmental attorneys and Falklands war veterans have filed a lawsuit to prevent a British-Israeli oil project near the disputed Falkland Islands, claiming that it endangers Argentina's sovereignty and the South Atlantic ecology.

The legal case focuses on the Sea Lion oil project, which is being developed by Britain's Rockhopper Exploration and Israel's Navitas Petroleum roughly 220 kilometres north of the Falkland Islands. The companies aim to begin oil production in 2028.

According to the Argentine groups, the project is moving forward without the necessary environmental assessments and authorisations under Argentine law. They have petitioned a federal court in Tierra del Fuego to halt the project and prohibit additional finance and contracts related to its construction.

The issue adds another dimension to the long-running sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falklands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas. Argentina claims that unilateral use of natural resources in the disputed territory breaches applicable UN agreements.

The case comes as US President Donald Trump signalled that Washington's longstanding position on the Falklands dispute could be revised. Argentine President Javier Milei has referred to the Malvinas cause as a ‘sacred’ national issue.
