US Denies Plans to Sell Weapons to China After Trump-Xi Remarks
The Trump administration has said the United States has no plans to sell weapons to China after US Ambassador to China David Perdue said President Donald Trump had asked Chinese President Xi Jinping whether Beijing would be interested in purchasing American arms.
Perdue made the comments during a Fox News interview while discussing US arms sales to Taiwan. He said Trump had raised the possibility of selling weapons to Xi, although he did not provide details about when the conversation took place or how the Chinese president responded.
The US State Department subsequently clarified that American law prohibits arms sales to China and said there is no offer or plan for such a deal.
The remarks come amid continued tensions between Washington and Beijing over Taiwan. US arms sales to the self-governed island have long been opposed by China, while Washington maintains a policy of providing Taiwan with defence-related equipment under the Taiwan Relations Act.
