Heavy Rains Trigger Floods In India’s Uttar Pradesh, 81 Killed

Lucknow: At least 81 people have died and 62 others were injured after intense rainfall triggered flooding and widespread damage across Uttar Pradesh between September 25 and 27, according to the state relief department.
Sitapur had the most deaths (seven), followed by Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, and Balrampur, each with five. Ayodhya, Maharajganj, and Gorakhpur each had four deaths. The state also recorded 154 animal deaths and damage to 2,254 houses.
The rainfall was especially intense, with Uttar Pradesh getting an average of 66.5 mm in 48 hours, compared to the normal 7.6 mm, which is roughly 775% over normal. As many as 56 of the state's 75 districts reported significant extra rainfall.
Several rivers, notably the Ghagra and Rapti, have risen, heightening the flood risk in low-lying areas. Rescue, relief, and damage assessment activities are ongoing, while authorities are still estimating agricultural losses.
