Grueso Lifts Bahrain to Bronze

Ingrid Grueso added another medal to Bahrain’s haul at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya yesterday, claiming bronze in the women’s 69kg weightlifting competition.

The 20-year-old lifted a combined 229kg at Nagoya City Trade and Industry Center, finishing just three kilograms behind silver medallist Chen Wen-huei of Chinese Taipei.

Grueso lifted 101kg in the snatch before posting 128kg in the clean and jerk, with each competitor’s best successful lift in the two disciplines added together to determine their overall total.

Her 229kg was enough to secure bronze in a tight battle for the final podium place, edging the Philippines’ Kristel Macrohon by just two kilograms.

North Korea’s Song Kuk Hyang dominated the competition, taking gold with a world-record total of 273kg after lifting 121kg in the snatch and 152kg in the clean and jerk.

Bahrain’s campaign continues today, with Jokser Quinto contesting the men’s 95kg Group A final from 11am Bahrain time.

Alina Marushchak competes in the women’s 86kg event at 3.30am tomorrow, before Gor Minasyan takes part in the men’s +110kg division at 1.10pm on the concluding day of weightlifting.
