Amman: Jordan’s Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah visited the baptism site of Jesus, known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan, on Monday to review preparations for the 2,000th anniversary of the event in 2030.

The crown prince directed officials to improve facilities at the UNESCO World Heritage site for Christian pilgrims and other visitors expected to attend the celebrations.

He said the anniversary would highlight Jordan’s importance as a Christian pilgrimage destination and called for greater efforts to promote the site in cooperation with the country’s tourism authorities.

Jordan and Palestine are also working together to promote religious tourism ahead of the 2030 celebrations. Both have several major Christian and biblical sites, including Mount Nebo in Jordan and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in East Jerusalem.

The crown prince was accompanied by senior tourism officials and representatives of the Baptism Site Commission during the visit.
