Why Wiping Out Measles Is 'Impossible,' According to Bill Gates

LONDON: Bill Gates says wiping out measles globally has become impossible because surging vaccine hesitancy and anti-vaccine sentiment are concentrated in wealthy nations.

Once a primary target for eradication, the goal was dropped from the foundation's list because affluent countries failed to maintain necessary immunization coverage.

Recent years have triggered a sharp surge in cases across places like the United States and Europe, where the disease was nearly forgotten.

This skepticism has been championed for decades by figures such as U.S. health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. under President Donald Trump.

Fortunately, this harmful anti-vaccine trend has not spread to lower-income nations. However, measles remains vastly deadlier in those poorer regions due to persistent malnutrition and severe healthcare gaps.

Additionally, recent financial aid cuts caused numerous tragic deaths this year, though partial funding restorations successfully averted an even more catastrophic worst-case scenario for vulnerable populations.
