Merz Cancels Trump Call After U.S. President Backs Germany’s Far Right

Berlin: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has cancelled a phone meeting with US President Donald Trump, who has publicly praised Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) electoral victory.
Trump hailed the AfD after it received over 44% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, calling it a huge success and blaming Germany's immigration policy for the party's ascent.
The result has put Merz under significant domestic pressure. He has rejected cooperation with the AfD and strongly criticised its anti-immigrant and pro-Russia stances.
The apparent diplomatic snub comes as political tensions between the United States and Germany rise due to Trump's support for Europe's far right.
