Washington: US President Donald Trump has warned that Washington faces a choice between reaching an agreement with Iran and launching further military action, as diplomatic efforts continue to ease the conflict.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, speaking to military leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico near Washington, said American forces had severely damaged Iran's military capabilities, including its navy, air force, air defence systems and military-industrial capacity. He also said Iran's nuclear programme had been significantly weakened.
At the same time, Iran said it had received a US response to its proposal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global shipping. The response was conveyed through Qatari mediators as efforts continue to break the deadlock between Washington and Tehran.
The discussions are focused on finding a way to restore shipping through the strait while addressing wider disagreements, including Iran's nuclear programme.
