DR Congo Ebola outbreak becomes deadliest in country's history

Kinshasa, DR Congo: The fast-spreading Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has officially become the country's deadliest ever after killing more than 2,300 people in three months.

Official government figures confirm 2,325 deaths out of 4,945 recorded cases, with the United Nations warning that the epidemic is claiming a victim every 30 minutes.

Driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain, the virus currently lacks any approved vaccine or specific treatment. First declared on May 15, the outbreak has rapidly expanded across six provinces, hitting eastern and northern regions where state presence and basic healthcare infrastructure are severely lacking.

This current crisis surpasses the country's previous deadliest outbreak from 2018 to 2020, which killed 2,299 people. World Health Organization officials hope to reverse the spread within three months, but field containment remains hampered by escalating complications.

Response efforts are obstructed by active armed groups across split front lines, deep community mistrust that leads over 70 percent of patients to die at home, and local health workers striking over unpaid bonuses.
