Huertgenwald :Around 1,800 people were evacuated from the Huertgenwald area of western Germany overnight as a rapidly spreading wildfire approached residences. The fire grew from about 25 hectares to almost 300 hectares, leading authorities to put up emergency shelters at a local school and sports complex.
Helicopters and German army tracked vehicles were dispatched to assist firemen in battling the flames in the challenging, hilly terrain. The fire also spread to locations containing unexploded Second World War ordnance, with explosions recorded throughout the operation.
Authorities said the fire has controlled by Friday, but warned that the situation remained dangerous, especially if winds increased. Germany is experiencing increased wildfire threats due to hot, dry weather and a prolonged heatwave.
