35 Mauritanians Released After Mali Detention, Some Reportedly Tortured

Thirty five Mauritanian nationals who had been jailed in Mali for nearly three weeks on suspicion of terrorism have returned home, according to the Mauritania government. The authorities also stated that several of the detainees were tortured while in jail.
The men captured amid rising security concerns in Mali, where attacks by Tuareg separatists and Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists have risen in recent months. According to Malian sources, the Mauritanians are accused of involvement in terrorist activities.
The group's release and return has sparked widespread concern in Mauritania, particularly due to allegations of abuse and mistreatment. According to a government spokesman, the inmates returned on Wednesday, although specifics surrounding their release were not immediately released.
The incident occurs at a time when cross-border insecurity and armed groups have alarmed communities and authorities in both Mauritania and Mali, where security conditions are still unstable.
