32 nations condemn Iran’s execution of protesters

Paris: A coalition of 32 nations, including France, Britain, Germany  and Canada, issued a joint statement condemning Iran for executing protesters to silence dissent. 

The signatory countries, alongside the European Union's top diplomat, demanded an immediate end to capital punishment and the release of arbitrarily detained individuals.

The declaration asserted that using the death penalty to intimidate communities and punish citizens exercising human rights can never be justified. It stressed that the people of Iran must be free to exercise freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the statement, accusing Western nations of blatant hypocrisy. He posted that backing Israel’s actions in Gaza and aggression against Iran destroyed whatever moral high ground those governments claimed to hold.

The joint action aligns with growing alarm from the United Nations over rising executions. UN rights chief Volker Turk warned Tehran uses capital punishment to instil fear, noting at least 56 security-related executions since mid-March.

The crackdown follows widespread anti-government protests and regional conflict, amidst warnings from rights groups regarding forced confessions and unfair trials.
