Afghan Universities Enforce Smartphone Ban, Students Divided

Afghan university students are divided over a new smartphone ban on campus, with some claiming that it has increased focus while others worry that it is impacting their academics and cutting them apart from their families.

The prohibition followed an edict issued by Taliban Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada in June prohibiting smartphone use among government employees. The restriction has subsequently been expanded to higher institutions, with Kabul University instructing professors, staff, and students to leave smartphones off campus starting June 21. Similar limitations have been reported at Herat University, where the ban also applies to student residences and Wi-Fi service has been terminated.

Students who support the move argue that smartphones can be distracting and that their absence helps them to focus better in class. Others argue that phones are vital academic tools, allowing users to photograph lessons, access digital books and study materials, search for information, and contact with teachers.

The prohibition has also sparked concerns about emergency communications. Some students say they can no longer easily communicate with their families, especially when security incidents arise on or near university campuses.

The Taliban has defended smartphone limitations on the grounds of discipline, attention, and its interpretation of religious norms.
