Turkey passes historic law to advance PKK peace process

The Turkish parliament has passed a significant measure that establishes a legal framework for the disbandment of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the reintegration of eligible former militants into society.
The measure, passed on August 10 with 468 out of 600 MPs voting in favour, provides legal protections and the possibility of sentence postponement for former PKK members who meet certain qualifications and were not involved in specific heinous crimes.
The action is a significant step in Turkey's efforts to settle a decades-long struggle with the PKK, which has killed over 40,000 people. Following PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan's 2025 demand to cease the armed struggle, the group decided to dismantle and lay down its weapons.
The bill gets support from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's ruling AK Party, nationalist MHP supporters, and the pro-Kurdish DEM party. However, bigger concerns such as Kurdish political and cultural rights and Öcalan's status remain unresolved, posing further hurdles to the peace process.
