Kabul: Five years after returning to power, Afghanistan’s Taliban government has successfully forged working diplomatic and economic relationships across the globe, despite Russia remaining the only nation to officially recognise the regime.

Practical necessity has driven both regional neighbors and Western powers to interact with Kabul. European nations have engaged in direct talks regarding migration and asylum returns, while Asian states prioritize regional security.

Trade and resource investments serve as primary catalysts for this interaction. Central Asian countries are developing transit corridors through Afghanistan, while foreign companies, notably from China, actively invest in the nation’s vast mineral reserves.

However, broader diplomatic legitimacy remains blocked. Western nations insist on human rights reforms particularly ending severe restrictions on women and girls before considering formal recognition.

Despite these impasses, global actors increasingly acknowledge that engagement is inevitable, with diplomats from nations like India calling for international policies to reflect Kabul’s current political reality.
