Hong Kong: A Hong Kong court has sentenced a prison guard to imprisonment for abusing an inmate in an incident that has sparked debate about how detainees are treated in the city's correctional institutions.
The former correctional guard was convicted of attacking an inmate inside Pik Uk Prison, with the court finding that he abused his position by joining in the violent assault. The incident apparently left the inmate with critical injuries and required the intervention of other detainees.
The sentencing comes amid increased scrutiny of conditions in Hong Kong's jails, where rights groups and former convicts have previously claimed physical abuse and mistreatment by correctional officers. Authorities asserted that issues are investigated according to standard procedures.
The case is regarded as one of the most significant convictions involving a Hong Kong prison official in recent years, emphasising the judiciary's position that inmate abuse by correctional staff would not be condoned.
