Ankara: An 8 months pregnant woman died after falling from her apartment's balcony in Turkey, prompting officials to arrest her husband as part of the inquiry.
The woman, who was in her latter stages of pregnancy, was pronounced dead on the scene. Emergency responders were unable to save either her or the unborn child. Police have initiated a criminal inquiry to determine the circumstances of the deadly fall.
Prosecutors took the victim's husband into custody for interrogation after citing contradictions in initial statements and ordered additional forensic investigations. Authorities have not announced if formal charges have been filed, and police say all possibilities, including foul play, are still being investigated.
The case has sparked considerable concern in Turkey, where unexplained murders involving women have fuelled calls for rigorous investigations and better safeguards against gender-based violence. Officials stated the investigation is still underway, and further information would be revealed as evidence is analysed.
