Saudi Arabia, Muslim Nations Condemn Attempted Houthi Drone Attack on Makkah

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday condemned the attempted launch of a Houthi drone toward the holy city of Makkah on Tuesday, describing it as a violation of the sanctity of Islamic holy sites.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry said the incident marked the second reported attempt to target Makkah, following an earlier attempt in July 2017. It praised the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces for intercepting and destroying the drone before it entered the city's restricted airspace.

Riyadh called on the international community to condemn such attacks and take a firm position against threats targeting holy sites, civilian and economic infrastructure, and maritime navigation.

The Kingdom also reaffirmed its right to take necessary measures to protect the Two Holy Mosques, pilgrims, its territory, citizens and residents.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Muslim World League, Arab League, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain and Pakistan also condemned the attempted attack and expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia.

Bahrain called on the UN Security Council to adopt a firm position against Houthi attacks, while Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Islamabad's support for Saudi Arabia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional tensions.
